Never Give Up Hope
Life doesn’t always give us the joys we want. We don’t always get our hopes and dreams, and we don’t always get our own way. But don’t give up hope, because you can make a difference, one situation and one person at a time. Look for the beauty around you---in nature, in others, in yourself---and believe in the love of friends, family, and humankind. You can find love in a smile or a helping hand, in a thoughtful gesture or a kind word. It is all around, if you just look for it. Give love, for in giving it you will find the power in life along with the joy, happiness, patience, and understanding. Believe in the goodness of others and remember that anger and depression can be countered by love and hope. Even when you feel as though there isn’t a lot you can do to change unhappiness or problems, you can always do a little---and a little at a time eventually makes a big difference. （170）
Hang In There
Difficulties arise in the lives of us all. What is the most important is dealing with the hard times, coping with the changes, and getting through to the other side where the sun is still shining just for you. It takes a strong person to deal with tough times and difficult choices. But you are a strong person. It takes courage. But you possess the inner courage to see you through. It takes being an active participant in your life. But you are in the driver’s seat, and you can determine the direction you want tomorrow to go in. Hang in there and take care to see that you don’t lose sight of the one thing that is constant, beautiful, and true: Everything will be fine--and it will turn out that way because of the special kind of person you are. So beginning today and lasting a lifetime through---Hang in there, and don’t be afraid to feel like the morning sun is shining just for you. （168）
I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am with you. No man or woman is worth your tears, and the one who is, won’t make you cry. The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can’t have them. Never frown, even when you are sad, because you never know who is falling in love with your smile. To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world. Don’t waste your time on a man or a woman, who isn’t willing to waste their time on you. Just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to, doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have. Don’t try so hard, the best things come when you least expect them to. Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one, so that when we finally meet the person, we will know how to be grateful. Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. （186）
I Will Laugh at the World
No living creature can laugh except man. Trees may bleed when they are wounded, and beasts in the field will cry in pain and hunger, yet only I have the gift of laughter and it is mine to use whenever I choose. Henceforth I will cultivate the habit of laughter.
I will smile and my digestion will improve; I will chuckle and my burdens will be lightened; I will laugh and my life will be lengthened for this is the great secret of long life and now it is mine.
I will laugh at the world. I will paint this day with laughter; I will frame this night in song. Never will I labor to be happy; rather will I remain too busy to be sad. I will enjoy today’s happiness today. It is not grain to be stored in a box. It is not wine to be saved in a jar. It cannot be saved for the morrow. It must be sown and reaped on the same day and this I will do, henceforth.
I will laugh at the world. And so long as I can laugh never will I be poor. This, then, is one of nature’s greatest gifts, and I will waste it no more. Only with laughter and happiness can I truly become successful. Only with laughter and happiness can I enjoy the fruits of my labor. Were it not so, far better would it be to fail, for happiness is the wine that sharpens the taste of the meal. To enjoy success I must have happiness, and laughter will be the maiden who serves me. （270）
Man’s life is a process of growing up, actually I’m standing here is a growth. If a person’s life must be constituted by various choices, then I grow up along with these choices. I wonder what the future holds for me.
When I come to this school, I told to myself: this my near future, all starts here. Following I will learn to become a man, an integrated man, who has a fine body, can take on important task, has independent thought, an open mind, intensive thought, has the ability to judge right and wrong, has a perfect job.
Once my teacher said: “you are not sewing, you are stylist; never forget which you should lay out to people is your thought, not craft.” I will put my personality with my interest and ability into my study, during these process I will combine learning with doing. If I can achieve this “future”, I think that I really grow up. And I deeply believe kindred, good-fellowship and love will be perfect and happy in the future.
How to say future? Maybe it’s a nice wish. Let’s make up our minds, stick to it and surely well enjoy our life. （196）
I Love English
I love English. English language is now used everywhere in the world. It has become the most common language on Internet and for international trade. Learning English makes me confident and brings me great pleasure. When I was little, my mother sent me to an English school. At school, I played games and sang English songs with other children. Then I discovered the beauty of the language, and began my colorful dream in the English world. Everyday, I read English following the tapes. Sometimes, I watch English cartoons. On the weekends, I often go to the English corner. By talking with different people there, I have made more and more friends as well as improved my oral English. I hope I can travel around the world some day. I want to go to America to visit Washington Monument, because the president Washington is my idol. Of course, I want to go to London too, because England is where English language developed. If I can ride my bike in Cambridge university, I will be very happy. I hope I can speak English with everyone in the world. I’ll introduce China to them, such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. I know, Rome was not built in a day. I believe that after continuous hard study, one day I can speak English very well. If you want to be loved, you should learn to love and be lovable. So I believe as I love English everyday, it will love me too. （250）
A Young Idler, An Old Beggar
Almost everyone knows the famous Chinese saying: A young idler, an old beggar. (少壮不努力，老大徒伤悲) Throughout history, we have seen many cases in which this saying has again and again proved to be true.
It goes without saying that the youth is the best time of life，during which one’s mental and physical states are at their peaks. It takes relatively less time and pains to learn or accept new things in a world full of changes and rapid developments. In addition, one is less likely to be under great pressure from career, family and health problems when young. Therefore, a fresh mind plus enormous energy will ensure success in different aspects of life.
Of course, we all know: no pains, no gains. If we don’t make every effort to make good use of the advantages youth brings us, it is impossible to achieve any goals. As students, we should now try our best to learn all the subjects well so that we can be well prepared for the challenges that we will face in the future. （189）
Do you know the most popular pastime in the world is reading? Now there are various kinds of books available and we can learn lots of things from them. Books become the main source of knowledge we obtain.
Books provide us various aspects of knowledge. We can learn physics, chemistry, mathematics and philosophy etc., from books. These are all necessary for us. Without the scientific knowledge, a person will probably not know how to operate a washing machine and how to use a computer. Without all this knowledge, a person can not live a better life in the modern world.
Reading makes us understand the world more. If we have one month and one thousand dollars, we can only travel to one or two places to learn how people live there. But how many books can we buy with the money and can we finish in one month? All these books may contain information about dozens of places. We can learn more by reading than by traveling.
Reading is the most romantic and the safest kind of traveling. By reading, we can travel to the North Pole, without having to endure the freezing cold; we can also go to the desert without having to fear the threat of thirst. We can also go back to the ancient times to have a look at the people’s life without any difficulty. （229）
